The Everyman Palace Theatre is a classic Victorian structure and a sister venue to the Olympia Theatre, Dublin – both of which Rory loved.
When growing up, it was then called “The Palace”, one of two cinemas on MacCurtain Street – the other being The Coliseum – which fed Rory’s appetite for the movies.
At The Palace I remember seeing Elvis Presley’s “Jail-house Rock” with him. On returning home with Rory fuelled to the gills with rock energy, obeying his command to assemble a drum kit of plastic buckets with school rulers for sticks to back his hyper-eagerness to replicate the songs from the film on his guitar.
In 1992, Rory had his dream come true by playing a gig there. He had also played a supportive role in the venue’s restoration.
